J'adore Inkscape.
I tried GIMP, but was not comfortable with how it looked. Basically, Inkscape looks closer to Photoshop than GIMP does...in my opinion. I was using Photoshop Elements 3.0 (ancient), but had to find a new photo editing program since that version is not compatible with Alice - my lovely, new laptop. Inkscape was the answer.
If you do any of these tasks with Photoshop, then Inkscape is for you:
-adjusting image levels
-working with layers
-creating SVGs - bonus to all the Cricut users
-adjusting transparency levels
Try it out and see for yourself. The worse thing that could happen is you have to take a few minutes to uninstall this FREE program.
Last words: Photoshop still rocks my socks, but Inkscape is a good alternative for simple tasks.
